Philippines Update

Update from my Aunt & Uncle:

Hi! Friends,
Sandy and I hope that all is going well with you these days. We are busy helping to deal with Sandy's brother Steve's battle against Leukemia disease as he starts his second round of the stem cell (bone marrow) transplant with Sandy as the donor, plus we are also preparing to leave for Costa Rica on October 22nd for a 12 day mission trip there. We appreciate all of your faithful prayers & friendship for us. This next week will be an important week for us all. We are believing it will be the start of the completed healing process for Steve. We will try to keep you informed about how it is all going.

We have been getting reports from our ministry friends in the Philippines about the catastrophe there the past 2 weeks that was caused by the two typhoons. The first typhoon "Ondoy" hit the Metro Manila area with it's 15 million+ population. Most of the Metro area was flooded. That brought them to a standstill. Streets with running water like rivers. They had 17 inches of rain in a day or two! Most of the media sources are stationed there, so it was hard for any news to get out. Several days later Typhoon "Pepeng" arrived farther north on the same main Island of Luzon. This is where Sandy and I minister when we are there. All of the SLWM churches are in affected areas. Most areas received 2-3 feet of rain in a day or two accompanied by very strong winds. Pepeng caused MAJOR flooding of 6-20 feet of water in many heavily populated areas. In the mountainous areas there were many dangerous mudslides that destroyed many homes and killed hundreds of people. Transportation is very difficult because of numerous road blockages and bridges destroyed. Many rice and vegetable fields had crops that were ruined. Several of our SLWM pastors are telling of the deaths and terrible trials of the people as they deal with the situation. It will take many months of hard work for the Filipino people to recover from this. Many areas of Asia have been affected with other tragedies. We need to be praying for ALL of them.

If you would like to help by giving for this particular need of the Filipino people you can send any amount (tax deductable) to our SLWM giving address listed below. ALL of the money designated will be used to help those that our SLWM churches can reach in their areas who have needs.

Below is a letter and pictures from our dear friends who live in the area where we travel and minister there. There compound was one of many that sustained heavy damage from the typhoon. The scenes are typical of what has happened in many places there.

Blessings, David & Sandy

Letter from our friend Leslie Gomez:

Hi again

Thank you for praying for us. We are getting cleaned up at LAMA House and several folk have gone "home" to what is left of their home. Here are some pics of the squatter families who lived on the beach near us, where we had church. The picture of the roof - the family are living under it as it is now! Did you notice, though, that folks are still smiling? One family returned to LAMA today with a gift of fish they had caught - can you imagine? That is the quality of their spirit there despite their poverty. And fish is expensive in the market right now. We can't buy a lot of things as the roads to Baguio and Manila are both blocked, vegetable and rice harvests have been destroyed.
Today in Pugo a family of five were uncovered as neighbours tried to clean up the debris. All dead.
It is so gruesome - and yet we are not as badly off as others in Pangasinan, Baguio and Manila.

Thank you all,
Lesley

It's Gonna be a DIY Christmas...

This photo belongs to http://earthfirst.com

This one is for the ladies (or craft saavy guys)! I've been feeling inspired by the frugal media minds around me & this year I've decided that it's going to be a DIY Christmas!
I've been brainstorming, googling & blog hunting for the best & most unique home-made gifts out there & I have to say, there are some pretty great ideas floating around the internet world!
It reminds me of a favorite quote from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women "Necessity is indeed the mother of invention." How true!

Hope you find some inspiration here, I know I did & all my friends will be receiving some FAB DIY gifts this holiday season!

There's a little bit of everything to be found from bath salts to wine charms to memory jars to cookbooks. Some are cheesy, some are fun...but there's definitely something for everyone! If you have any great sources or sites, feel free to tag them on in the comments section!

Handing Over the Keys

This morning is the last morning I will hold in my hands the keys to my Infiniti. It has been more than 25 days since my car was stolen...and while it feels like much longer, God has been faithful every single one of those days in His promises. Romans 8:28 has proven itself true day after day for me & God has shown Himself repeatedly in my dealings with the insurance adjusters, car rental ppl, new car shopping...the list goes on.
As I picked up my keys & slipped them into the overnight delivery package to be sent to Geico, I realized how symbolic it was that I was turning over control of my "vehicle" to the unknown, trusting I would be taken care of. Right then, God spoke so clearly to me that in our lives we absolutely must do the same. Lay down our keys, release control of directing ourselves here or there...giving GOD the control to drive...to lead us in the right direction...I really have no idea where God is leading this situation...how He will use it for good beyond my small little bubble but I know He already has. Maybe it will be through the witness of the mass of audio books & Christian CD's in my car, maybe through my appreciation, gratitude & chance to share with the insurance claims adjusters. Maybe it will just be through my continued effort to have a positive outlook on this situation & my trust in God to provide for & take care of me in ALL circumstances.
Yes, I have absolutely learned the lesson that whether rain or shine, sickness or health, good or bad, in loss or gain, I am highly favored. I am loved, I am watched over, I am taken care of. God will never take away without a greater blessing waiting to be placed in my life & yours.
So today, as I remind myself of His faithfulness & blessings in my life, I hope as you read this, you find the same & give God the chance not only to bless you, but to steer you through the storm.

Wrong again...

When you think life can't get any worse, it will. When you think life can't get any better, it proves you wrong again. You're never going to figure it out, the best you can do is just keep trying & learn from each new situation God throws your way. When you mess up, try again; when you want to give up, don't & when you want to walk away, stop & stand still. Figure out why God has put you here & what He wants to show you...

Be Decisive

I was just reading Joyce Meyer's daily devotional online and today's topic was "Be Decisive". I generally like to think of myself as someone who is confident in knowing what they want & don't want...but I have come to realize, or rather, God has shown me, that in the little things, I have no problem being decisive-it's those big things, those hurdles, that I tend to run away in fear from.

I was having a conversation last night about trusting God during difficult situations. I remember several words coming out of my mouth, "I've learned that when rough situations come my way, God is not far behind. God's prospering hand is always present when I trust in & follow Him."

Yesterday was a really rough day for me...I had a very hard time releasing a situation to His control...so much so, that it made me sick, literally. But by the end of the day, after much contemplation and prayer...I did finally release it and guess what? I found peace.

That doesn't mean the problem is solved, it doesn't mean the situation is perfect...but what it means is that God is faithful in keeping His promises, in this case, the promise of Romans 8:28.

I know, I believe, I have no doubt in my mind that He is in control...why? Because I choose to let Him be in control of my life...my trust is in Him & that is the best "decision" I could ever make.

Reminders

This past week I've felt a little off. Do you ever have days or weeks where you just feel like you're not quite in sync with the rest of the world? I sometimes wonder what it is that throws us off balance...I'm sure there are about a million variables that influence our thoughts and actions, but what always helps me get back on track is refocusing my attention on God.
I'm sure we can all admit that during our day to day routine it is easy to get distracted by the little things...but what I love about my God is the signs He gives to redirect me. A traffic jam to teach me patience, an unexpected expense that forces me to trust my finances to Him, a sick family member that reminds me to pray and believe in the power of God's healing touch. All of these things, though trials in the eyes of most, remind me that no matter what distractions come my way, if I look hard enough, I can see God's hand in all of them...for me, nothing grabs my attention more & helps me to refocus my attitude.
Today I thank God for being the driving influence in my life and for reminding me once again, that my life revolves around Him, not the other way around.
